Migrating from Drupal 7 to Drupal 11: Why Now and How It Works

Drupal 7 officially reached end of life on 5 January 2025. That means there are no more official security releases from the Drupal community for Drupal 7 core or its modules. If your website still runs on Drupal 7, now is the right time to plan a migration.

Risks of staying on Drupal 7

• Security holes are no longer patched officially – the website becomes an easy target for automated attacks.
• Server compatibility – newer PHP versions are increasingly hard to run alongside old code.
• Hard to extend – fewer new modules and fewer developers willing to work on Drupal 7.

Why go straight to Drupal 11?

Drupal 11 is the latest major version, with better performance, a more modern admin interface and visual page builder support. Because migrating from Drupal 7 is essentially rebuilding the website's structure, it is more efficient to go straight to the newest version than to stop at an intermediate one.

Migration steps

1. Audit the old website

We map content types, fields, taxonomies, users, modules in use and custom code. From this it becomes clear what to keep, simplify or drop.

2. Redesign the structure and look

A migration is a chance to fix outdated information architecture and design, including making sure the layout is responsive and the SEO foundations are right.

3. Migrate the data

Content, images, users and URLs are moved using Drupal's Migrate API. Old URLs are redirected (301) to the new ones so your Google rankings are not lost.

4. Test and launch

All content and features are tested on a staging environment before the new website goes live, then monitored after go-live.

How much does migration cost?

Drupal migration / upgrade usually costs IDR 8 – 20 million, depending on the amount of content, the complexity of features and whether a redesign is needed. Websites with a lot of custom code or large data sets may need additional adjustments.
